A Closer Look: How Presbyopia Affects Your Eyesight

By Dr. Mary Ann Zastrow, Dated: August 23, 2018

Aging can bring many functional changes to your body, especially to your eyesight. The decline in your visual capacity is part of your body’s aging process and usually happens in your 40s. This may indicate presbyopia, a refractive error that can cause you to see less clearly.

A Closer Look: How Presbyopia Affects Your Eyesight

Origins Eye Clinic, a trusted eye care services provider in the area, explains this common eye problem.

Understanding Refraction and Presbyopia

To better understand how presbyopia develops, you need to understand how your vision works through refraction. Light rays that enter your eyes will pass through the cornea and pupil. Your iris will then regulate the amount of light passing through your pupil before allowing it to pass through the lens. This part of your eye will then change shape so it can bend the light rays further and focus them on your retina.

Presbyopia develops when your lens becomes less flexible over time and cannot bend light properly to focus it on your retina.

Medical Symptoms

Upon reaching your 40s, you may experience eyesight difficulty due to presbyopia. Common symptoms include headaches after reading, eye fatigue and squinting. You may also need brighter lighting than you usually do when you read. If you have any of these symptoms, you may want to visit your local optometry clinic for a comprehensive eye exam.

Effective Treatment

Presbyopia is an eye condition that your optometrist can treat right away. They can prescribe reading glasses if you don’t have other eye problems or bifocals to provide wider lens areas for reading and computer work.

Make your eye health a priority by visiting a premier eye care clinic like Origins Eye Clinic. Apart from diagnosing and treating presbyopia, we also offer LASIK eye surgery and other vision correction options to help you. Call us today at (612) 869-1333. We serve residents of Minneapolis and other nearby areas in MN.
