4 Ways to Reduce the Risk of Computer Vision Syndrome

Smartphones, computers, tablets and other electronic devices with visual displays can cause computer vision syndrome after extensive use. Origins Eye Clinic, an eye care services provider, discusses four ways to prevent this from happening:

  1. Take Regular Eye Exams – A routine eye exam can prevent computer vision problems. During the exam, tell your eye doctor how often you use a computer at work and at home. Measure how far your eyes are from a screen when you use the computer and inform your doctor. They will test your eyes at that specific distance.

  1. Use Proper Lighting – When you use your computer, you should have ambient lighting that is about half as bright as the light in an ordinary office. Avoid working under overhead fluorescent lights. If possible use lower intensity light bulbs and tubes.

  1. Use Computer Eyewear – As a LASIK eye surgery expert, we recommend getting computer glasses. These glasses can reduce eye strain and can provide you comfortable vision when using your computer. They can shield your eyes from high-energy blue light and they can reduce glare.

  1. Adjust Your Computer Settings – Adjust the brightness of your computer display so it’s the same as the brightness of your surroundings. Adjust the contrast and text size you use to reduce eye strain. Reduce the color temperature of your display to lower the amount of blue light it emits.
